Innledning
This course will deal primarily with mechanical and mathematical bases for biomechanical analysis methodologies. Kinematic computations involving position determination using the direct linear transformation, numerical methods, data filtering and body segment parameters will comprise the first half of the course. The second half will focus on kinetic analysis which helps explain causes of human motion using force measurement, inverse dynamics, energy characteristics and muscle activation.

Mål

 Students shall:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the biomechanical literature dealing with kinematic and kinetic analysis of human motion.
  • Calculate kinematic and kinetic characteristics which describe and explain human motion.
  • Describe in detail the assumptions, processes and potential errors of common biomechanical analysis methods.
Organisering og arbeidsformer

Primary course interaction will be of lecture/discussion format. Relevant readings from the biomechanics literature will require short summary writing. In addition, weekly data analysis projects associated with the lecture topic will require computation with appropriate software. During each week, one two hour meeting with the instructor will be used for lecture/discussion of topics, a second two hour meeting will involve student led review of relevant biomechanics literature, a third weekly meeting will involve small project data analysis and discussion of results.

Some of the lectures will be in english.

Vurdering

Written project reports and literature summaries along with oral reviews of papers from the literature will be required each week. These will be evaluated as "bestått" or "ikke bestått".

A final written examination will involve both computational and conceptual analysis related to biomechanical methodology and implications for human movement. The computational parts will be completed during a four hour period with computer access while the conceptual parts will be "take home, open book" responses to questions which will be returned one week later.

The computational part will be weighted 1/3 and the conceptual part 2/3 of the final exam which will receive an overall letter grade.
